Cracked Eggs
Can an egg be cracked open from the inside?
Garrison Keillor from the radio show “A Prairie Home Companion” always had a weekly story
that started with “it’s been a busy week here at Lake Wobegon...” He was a master storyteller.
We’ve also had a busy week here at Earth Song Farm. We had 6 baby goats (kids) born last week and
watching them play and prance around as they discover their new world is absolutely hilarious.
They love running on our deck because the sounds their hooves make on the wood. They jump
straight up and prance sideways. They tumble over each other, get a quick snack from mom
and then race up the hill. What joyfulness!
So back to the question of “can an egg be cracked open from the inside?”
Ask your kids.
They’ll probably know the answer instantly.
Ask any baby chick and they will assure you that they have done it.
Watching baby chicken embryos develop and finally cracking open is a
lifetime memory event. I still remember playing with baby chicks when
I was 5 years old. Maybe that’s why I enjoy all the chickens on our farm.
Each one has a personality.
Earth Song Farm is one of about 30 farms across North America that takes incubators
and cages into schools and homes to bring the wonder of baby chicks into their lives.
I love sharing with kids about what life is like as a chicken and how chicks are born.
We talk about the egg coming out of the hens butt every couple of days. We talk about
chasing bugs and juicy worms. We talk about the difference between hens and roosters
and what their jobs are.
If you would like to experience this for your family, go to HatchTheChicken.com.
We are scheduling incubator deliveries right now for this year.
If you would like to
try backyard chickens without making a big financial or long term commitment, we can
also make that happen. We bring to your backyard a portable chicken coop with 2 or 4
hens that are already laying eggs along with all the supplies and food. When the weather
gets colder in the late fall, we bring everything back to the farm, unless “Chicken Love”
has overcome you and you want to keep them. You can learn more about that at RentTheChicken.com.
So far winter has been mild, and we’ve had many kids visit Discovery park.
The park is free during the winter. The train cars are in the shop getting
completely rebuilt. They’ve taken quite a beating over the past three years.
The factory is also being rebuilt and will become the “Play Barn”, a place
for toddlers to explore while their big brothers and sisters are out in the park.
The airplane is airborne with steps going up. I’m sure there will be many
imaginary flights this summer.
We miss all of you and the laughter and squeals. Can’t wait for spring to break!
And as if I’m not busy enough, I am also writing a book about the power of play
and how it’s key to how we learn. Cindy is hard at work doing the illustrations.
Hopefully we will have it available in the spring.
It’s Fun Being a Kid Again!
Let’s have some fun at Discovery Park!
That’s what good play is all about.
No directions, nobody telling you that “you can’t do it that way”.
It’s pure discovery!
