Music to My Ears

“In the beginning was the word”. Words are vibrations from your vocal chords you use all the time. Everything in the world is vibration and frequencies. You, your chair, table, house, car – it’s all made of different frequencies. Some vibrations are so fast that we can’t hear them.

Our ears only have a certain range of vibrations that we can tune into. There’s background noise we tune out like the furnace and refrigerator. There are sounds that demand our attention like horns or sirens. People are talking – we’re listening – trying to understand their point.

Then we come to music. It’s all over the world…. the universal language. Some we love, some sounds strange, some we hate. We are surrounded by it. The question is: are we just a receiver or a maker?

Music from a Child’s Heart!

Jamin Tree stage is for makers. It’s a stage to try out instruments, many you’ve never seen. Of course there are drums of all sizes that resonate with different tones and cymbals, chimes and triangles. Have you ever tried a Caribbean drum or a xylophone? There’s a pipe organ made of plastic plumbing pipe – 2 full octaves.

At the front of the stage is a microphone waiting for the lead singer. I’m certainly not expecting a concert. That’s not the point. We witnessed one young girl in full on performance singing her heart out, even with gestures. There wasn’t an audience, just her and the birds singing along.

This is purely a laboratory of vibration – sound. Let’s experiment. Try this – try that. Let’s make a music machine. You hit the drum bang, bang, bang, pause, repeat. Hit the xylophone, these two notes, back and forth. You at the pipe organ, furiously play this note. It’s crazy but we’re having fun making music our own way!

Let’s have some fun
at Discovery Park!

That’s what good play is all about.

No directions, nobody telling you that
“you can’t do it that way”.

It’s pure discovery!
