Stories are told and tidbits of life come at us all the time – just like this one. I have one story I think about regularly. This is my recollection of that story. “A man dies and is an organ donor. His heart is placed in another man who desperately needs a transplant. The first man’s wife is now widowed.

As they talked, the widow felt a connection to the divorced man. He seemed to have many of the same values and characteristics of her deceased husband. They continued to get to know each other and eventually married.”

We are usually taught that the brain is where thinking happens. We analyze, evaluate, remember and decide in our head. I’m not so sure. There are so many phrases that we use that imply the heart is where decisions come from.

Consider the following phrases: What does your heart say? · A heartfelt thanks · Follow your heart · Speak from the heart · Having a heavy heart · Your heart needs mending

Perhaps the brain is more like a hard drive where we keep memories, procedures, patterns, calculation techniques. The brain can run the body, do the job, get you to the right place. But I believe it’s the heart that finds the joy, love and passion in our life. Yes the mind can drive the body, but the heart creates the spark that is you.

Let’s take that idea to the next level. Life is about interacting with people – kids, spouse, parents, siblings, boss, co-workers. As you interact, start refining those events to be heart connections. That is easy with some interactions, but hard with others. But when you speak to someone with gentleness, real concern – that’s heart talk.

When you listen, be active, trying to understand why they are saying that, what are they really driving at. Don’t think about what you are going to say or a rebuttal. Take a deep breath – ponder – give a slow, thoughtful response. It will change the dynamics of every interaction.

Life is about learning how to love more deeply. Learning to love those that don’t seem to be as love-able is the real challenge – and success.

Pour your heart out (not your brain)!  It will get stepped on as others fumble around in life. The risk is worth it. You will survive and keep growing.

That’s what good play is all about.

No directions, nobody telling you that
“you can’t do it that way”.
